There are some things you only understand when you ride a motorcycle in the Philippines. Like leaving home early in the morning, thinking you’ll be back before lunch, only to find yourself three towns away because someone said, “Tara, ikot lang.” A simple ride can quickly turn into a full-day adventure.
Every rider has experienced unpredictable weather. The sky is clear when you leave, then suddenly the rain starts pouring. You look for a place to stop, put on your rain gear, and just when you're ready to continue, the rain stops. Then there are the roads—traffic, potholes, construction, unexpected detours, and that one road you thought would save you time but somehow made the trip longer.
Group rides have their own experiences too. Someone is always late. Someone forgets the route. Someone gets separated from the group. And someone will inevitably ask, “Saan tayo kakain?” even though nobody has planned where to eat. Then there is the famous “malapit na,” which can mean five minutes or another forty kilometers.
But perhaps the most memorable part of riding isn't the road itself. It's what happens along the way. The quick coffee stop that becomes an hour of conversation. The roadside meal that unexpectedly becomes the best food of the trip. The new friend you meet because you happened to stop at the same place. And when the group is connected through a Jabbre, even the usual “Saan na kayo?” or “Pre, wait lang!” becomes part of the ride.
For many Filipino riders, motorcycles are more than a way to get from one place to another. They are a way to escape the daily routine, discover new places, spend time with friends, and create stories. Some rides are carefully planned. Others happen because someone simply said, “Tara.”
And no matter how many times you ride, there is always something unexpected waiting on the road.
Maybe that's why we keep coming back.
Because riding isn't really about how far you go. It's about who you ride with, what you experience, and the stories you bring home.
